A subluxation is a joint that has lost some of its normal range of motion which results in altered biomechanical, neurological, and physiological function. What does this mean? It means that any joint in the body can get "stuck" or "restricted" and results in altered function. This can be shown by symptoms such as pain, muscle weakness, or a decreased range of motion. A chiropractor is highly trained to feel this "restriction" and perform an "adjustment" to correct this. This is a safe, well documented, non-invasive way to treat many conditions. It has less side affects than medication and is less invasive than surgery.
Our clinic likes to focus on the soft tissue and muscle stretching. Even though the adjustment is very important, it is also important to address the muscles, tendons, and ligaments that are supporting that joint as well. The term "subluxation" is commonly confusing because the medical term directly translated means dislocation or partially dislocated. Also, for the sake of an easy explaination to patients, many chiropractors say that the bone is "out of place" and gives the impression that they are puttting it "back into place". This does not occur as you can not see a difference with pre and post adjustment x-rays. When you are adjusted, it affects the range of motion within a joint and the function of the joint, not the actual position of the bone.
